Papers of the Tayloe family [manuscript], 1708-1890.

The collection contains the mercantile account book, 1708-1710, of Lyonel Loyde and Stephen Loyde trading with their brother James Loyde of London. It contains records of tobacco sales and includes an account of slaves imported from "Guinea" on the "Leopard Galley" 1710 July 4. A copy of a letterbook, 1829, kept by Edward Thornton Tayloe of the U.S. legation in Bogotá contains information on Simón Bolívar and the war between Colombia and Peru. Tayloe discusses the Convention of Ocaña at length, and accusations by the Colombian government that U.S. minister William Henry Harrison and British consul James Henderson were supporting enemies of Bolívar. Descriptions of Bogotá and surrounding sights are included. Tayloe's farm journal, 1850-1869, for Powhatan Hill, King George County, contains information on weather, crops, livestock and slaves including runaways, and mentions local and political events. A narration of his arrest and two months detention by the Union Army in 1864 is included. A farm account book, 1866-1890, begun by Tayloe, contains records of merchandise purchases, crop production and sales.
